In the summer of 2025, strategic leadership is confronted with unprecedented challenges and opportunities within an environment characterized by continuous disruptions-ranging from geopolitical realignments to technological revolutions and shifting market landscapes. For contemporary organizations, navigating this volatile setting is essential for long-term survival and competitive advantage. Leaders are called to adopt a new mindset-one that transcends reactive management to become architects of dynamic, resilient organizations capable of thriving amid persistent change (Keller & Aaker, 2024; Levy & Murnieks, 2024).
Strategic leadership today necessitates balancing audacious innovation with a sincere commitment to organizational purpose, stakeholder engagement, and sustainable performance. Innovation is no longer optional but a core driver of growth and resilience. Leaders must cultivate organizational cultures that promote experimentation, collaboration, and continuous learning-enabling organizations to adapt seamlessly to fast-evolving environments (Tushman & O'Reilly, 2024; Grant & Gino, 2024).
At the heart of effective leadership in these times lies the development of organizational agility and collective intelligence. The intensifying scope and velocity of disruptions demand a shift from traditional top-down control toward inclusive, enabling leadership approaches. Organizations that foster environments of empowerment, where teams at all levels can respond swiftly and innovatively to challenges, are better positioned to sustain engagement, build resilience, and maintain strategic alignment-even under uncertainty (Vera & Crossan, 2024; Snilka et al., 2024).
Furthermore, future-oriented decision-making becomes paramount. Leaders need to proactively build capabilities in areas such as digital transformation, corporate sustainability, and talent management, allowing organizations to anticipate and capitalize on emerging opportunities. Disciplined yet empathetic leadership energizes organizations to view disruption as a catalyst for renewal and growth rather than solely a threat (Bock & Yammarino, 2024; Day & Zaccaro, 2024).
The significance of strategic leadership and innovation as drivers of organizational resilience and competitive advantage cannot be overstated. Firms led by visionary leaders-those who inspire collective action, revisit foundational assumptions, and foster a culture of preparedness-are more likely to shape the future rather than merely react to it.
To advance the understanding and practice of this critical area, scholars are encouraged to contribute research exploring themes such as organizational evolution, technological innovation, adaptive leadership, competitive strategies, sustainability, and risk management. Emphasizing rigorous empirical research, theoretical innovation, and actionable insights will significantly enrich the strategic management literature. Cross-disciplinary approaches involving technology, behavioral sciences, and economics will further enhance the relevance and impact of future research-especially when linked to ethical and sustainable leadership principles.
In conclusion, this editorial issue a call to the academic community to intensify research efforts on strategic leadership and innovation in times of disruption. Deepening our collective knowledge in this domain will equip organizations with the wisdom and tools necessary to succeed in an increasingly complex global landscape.
